A kids snack with sugar that's actually good for gut health?

Just like every mum around the world who makes school lunches, I'm continuously faced with the dilemma of packing exciting, new and nutritious snacks.  Especially because I'm a health coach - you wouldn't believe the pressure ;)

I'm sure by now you understand the huge impact gut bacteria has on our overall health.

We have more bacteria in our body than human cells, and an imbalance in these “good” and “bad” gut bacteria results in all kinds of poor health - in kids this may be digestive issues, lethargy or moodiness.  I notice a huge change in my kids behaviour, particularly having trouble controlling their emotions when their diet is out of kilter and they've been eating more processed foods and less veggies.

A great snack for kids is dried seaweed.

I know it doesn't sound exciting, and it actually doesn't look very exciting either, but my kidlets gobble it up like no ones business!  

Seaweed is an excellent source of fibre, and fibre is the food of choice for our gut bacteria so it improves their gut health.

Fibre makes up about 25–75% of seaweed’s dry weight meaning it has a higher fibre content than most fruits and vegetables. The reason it's so good for gut health is that fibre can resist digestion and be used as a food source for bacteria in your large intestine instead.

There are also particular sugars found in seaweed called Sulfated Polysaccharides which have been shown to increase the growth of “good” gut bacteria.

These polysaccharides can also increase the production of short-chain fatty acids (SCFA), which provide support and nourishment to the cells lining your gut.

So if your kids need some extra fibre and they're resistant to brussel sprouts and broccoli, give some dried seaweed a whirl!
